I usually shutdown. Sometimes, I don't even do that. For example if I'm going into a meeting and down need the laptop. I just close the lid and pull the drive (don't really care about the laptop getting stolen, but I do care about my data).

I've been doing it for years with no issues. I just leave the screw out.
